Fire by friction is at the very heart of bushcraft and is often seen as a weird and wonderful skill, amazing those that see it demonstrated before their eyes. Some people believe it’s only possible in films or cartoons, just as my own school science teacher did. In fact the skill of making and using a bow drill set isn’t magic at all and can be learned once you fully grasp the techniques being taught.
Over the years I have taught to a wide range of different people of all shapes, sizes and strengths, from the keen bushcrafter who already has learnt many skills, novice adults wanting a taster day, to the 12 year old with little previous experience. Those that have achieved making fire in this method have one thing in common, they fully understood the basic principles! luckily for my students I am someone who has made endless mistakes learning most of the skills I have, and therefore can identify when others are making the same time consuming mistakes, and I am able to teach them how to overcome the challenges faced.
I have seen many learn the skills in just a couple of hours, whereas other may take much longer, however most achieve a burning ember in the end. No one can truly guarantee that a skill like this can be passed on in one day, but something that I can promise is you will leave having been shown how to make a bow drill set and having been taught the correct way to use it. After learning the technique to make a burning ember I’m sure you will be able to impress your family and friends and also find great joy In mastering this age old skill.
